ARCH 1162 - "Bricks as Image" part 10 (Tank Stream Way, 333 George Street, Sydney, New South Wales)

The Tanks Stream Way building seems like a old and cultural building within the city. The bricks around the building seemed weathered out and aging. The bricks in this building will be partially for decorating and partially for structural reasons.
When first built the building would of been stunning with the rendering and colour however after years of exposure to the natural elements we could see from the texture of the bricks that it has been eaten away and the mortar looks like if it is disappearing.
Even though it is clearly aging on the cover of the building continuous paint and repainting has given the building a slightly non old image. On the ground level the bricks were rendered with cream paint to maintain the splendour of the entrance.

The Bricks in this building is partially structural related and mostly decorational. Again this building consist of both old and new bricks as shown in the images. They are very obvious through their clear difference in colour and in this case the mortar as well.
The building is relatively orthogonal and symmetrical which will be prove easy to build and very pleasing to the eye. It is also helped with the layering of colour. The contrast in dark and light continues throughout the building with the white mortar and the dark bricks and occasionally the white strip of concrete support.
This building doesn’t contain any arches through this exterior instead it uses concrete supports through the building. This feature emphasises the orthogonality of the building which makes it resemble a strong impenetrable fortress, hence the police station.

The Sydney Visitor Centre we could see from the images is constructed out of a vasty variety of materials. I predict that it was partially constructed out of the bricks previously there and also on top of that there was the inclusion of modern brick work and introduction of new materials like glass and timber and concrete.
We could see the difference in the ages of the brick through it weathering. On the walls there is a very clear distinction between the newer and older bricks and they were put together to form the building.
Brick is then combined with materials like timber and concrete and glass in order to give it a contemporary look but at the same time blend into the buildings around the area of the site.
Bricks of this building is primary used for decoration through the quarter circular shapes on the walls. This presents it with a grand and monumental feeling as well as referring to the cultural and traditional atmosphere of the area.\

Bricks could also be seen in modern condo apartments. The modern brick could be seen as to be very similar to the old form of brick in terms of decoration however the structural element of the building will be totally different. A structural brick building will not be able to hold such a tall building on its own therefore support like steel or reinforced concrete must be used in order for it to stand.
The brick work which we could see from the photos is used for decoration reasons. The difference in extrusion of the building created interesting pattern through the walls of the building.
The difference in rendering on the brick is also used to create a gradient of colour as the building will look quite dull with only a single colour for its exterior. From the previous examples we could see that popular rendering colouring will involve dark orange or clay yellow as these colours resemble the idea of earth directly.

These terrace houses are constructed using clay bricks however very thick paint is ran over the brick work in order to hide its true identity. The reason for this is probably because the original brickwork isn’t very appealing or the fact that the owner wants a more contemporary look to the house but doesn’t want to rebuild the house using more modern material.
The bricks were painted over with vibrant colours which resemble the original brick colour so that wont seen as obvious that the building was repainted.
Timber was also used throughout the building for structural purposes for example the roof and its window were all constructed using timber probably because timber will be a light load and a cheap source of material at the time.
Bricks in the building will be used structurally to hold the house as one at the base.

The Old Sydney Holiday Inn is covered brickwork however I think that the internal structure will be constructed with other materials such as steel or reinforced concrete. The flat brickwork which runs through the building makes it very orthogonal therefore it will create a pure and clean image.
The columns at the front of the building could be just brick decorated on the outside and in the interior of the column certain materials like steel or concrete could be present.
From the valet parking area we could see that there is a concrete slab there for the cantilevering section. Therefore it is another evidence to show that the brickwork in this building is mostly used for decoration purposes. The reason could be the fact that it will create a more cultural and traditional kind of atmosphere and at the same time it will blend in with the surroundings in terms of materials.
This building is a case of a new era building which adopted a very traditional look.

ARCH 1162 - "Bricks as Image" part 4 (104 George Street Sydney New South Wales)

This building is primarily focused on the English style brick layout. Different types of bricks were also used throughout the building to achieve different colours for decoration reasons. The arch of the building is the semi circular arch for the symmetrical and circular feeling.
We could see from the exterior of the building the bricks used were done in different repetitive layers of sandstone and masonry bricks. This will also create a repetition in colour throughout the whole building.
The arch present in this building provides a circular walkway into the building making the atmosphere very welcoming. The idea of symmetry also runs through the building. The symmetry creates harmony around the building making it seem like a proportionally balanced building.
The bricks within this building could be both structural and decorative however over the years the interior materials have changed. Like in the images you could see plaster walls within the building. That could mean that the building could been through state of the art upgrades since when it was being built.
